What’s the identity verification badge?

The identity verification badge is a blue check mark next to your name that lets anyone who sees your profile know we’ve taken steps to verify your identity. This can help you stand out to clients and may increase your chances of getting offers.

How do I get the identity verification badge?

You can get the badge by spending 35 Connects and completing identity verification:

1. Go to Account settings (desktop) or Settings (mobile) > Identity Verification
2. Select Spend 35 Connects to get an IDV badge. If you don’t have enough Connects, you’ll see an option to purchase more
3. Complete the identity verification process within seven days of spending your Connects

Note: If you don’t complete the verification process within seven days, your Connects will not be refunded and you’ll need to start over.

Will I get my Connects back if I can’t complete identity verification?

No, Connects aren’t refundable if you’re unable to complete verification for any reason, including not finishing within the seven-day timeframe.

Am I required to have the identity verification badge?

No, but you are required to verify your identity when prompted (e.g., when accepting your first contract). You’ll be notified via email and a login popup if verification is needed.

You won’t need to spend Connects for mandatory verification, but if you want the badge shown on your profile afterward, it costs 35 Connects.

Does the identity verification badge have to be renewed — does it expire?

Yes. The badge is valid for three years. Upwork may request additional verification during that time, but you won’t have to pay Connects again for renewal.

If I already have the badge, do I need to pay to keep it?

No. Once you have the badge, you don’t need to pay again to keep it. However, you might be asked to reverify later on.

How long does the badge take to appear?

The badge should appear within three business days of successful verification.
