Freelancer referrals

Have more questions? Submit a request

Freelancers on Upwork can refer others to your project if they’re unavailable or lack the required skills. You can identify referrals in the Proposal Manager and are encouraged to review and interview referred freelancers before hiring. Referrals are unpaid and typically reflect professional goodwill.

Why did a freelancer I invited refer me to someone else?

If a freelancer doesn't have the time or right skills for your project, they might refer you to another freelancer. This is usually just them being helpful—because they liked your project, want to support their network, or both.

The referred freelancer could be someone they’ve worked with before or someone they found through a search on Upwork.

Upwork doesn’t offer incentives or rewards for referrals.

How do I know if the referred freelancer is a good fit?

It’s up to you to evaluate the referred freelancer, just like you would with any other proposal. Take a look at their profile, reviews, and portfolio. If they seem promising, feel free to message or interview them to learn more.

How can I tell which freelancers were referred to me?

In the Proposal Manager, you’ll see whether a freelancer applied directly, was invited by you, or was referred by someone else. That way, you know exactly how each proposal landed in your queue.

FAQs

What happens if I end up having an issue with the referred freelancer?
Sometimes, no matter how well you vet talent, a project doesn’t go as planned. If you’re unhappy with a freelancer’s work, your project may qualify for Upwork Payment Protection.
